The D.L. & W. Work Caboose No. 6420 replaced the No. 2420 in 1948 and has a die-cast DARK GRAY painted flat car frame, with a DARK GRAY painted plastic cab. Installed on this caboose is a searchlight, hand rails, tool boxes, two brake stands and a cab ladder. This made for a labor intensive assembly, which was why Lionel would not produce this caboose with these details after 1950. The special replacement lamp for the search light was available separately under the number 2420-20. The box for this replacement lamp is illustrated to the right.
Equipped with a high smoke stack and staple end trucks with magnetic couplers, this caboose was produced from 1948 until 1950. There are two variations of this car that have to do with the style of the lettering on the car:
Variation A: has rubber-stamped sans-serif "Lionel Lines" on the sides.
Variation B: has heat-stamped serif "Lionel Lines" on the side.
