In the Beginning...

The Cape Cod house goes back to the very beginning of what would later be called "Plasticville." It is believed to be one of the very first structures that Bachmann made, circa 1948 or 1949. Its creation did not stem from a demand for buildings for the then expanding toy train boom, but was rather created simply as a toy for children.

The early boxes did not say "Plasticville" on them because, at the time, Bachmann had not developed this name to associate with their products. Two of the HP-8 boxes are illustrated above. There is a third variety that is very scarce. To see an illustration of this box click here.

Bachmann would use this house in a variety of different combinations, among them was the HY-6 House and Yard Accessories Unit, and the VU-4 Community Unit, which is one of the few Master Units that pre-date 1950. After 1950, this house would also be incorporated into many other "Master Units" that were designed to be used with the popular toy train scales of the time - "O" and "S."

Over the years this house has been produced in a wide variety of colors, which makes this piece one of the most challenging to collect. We’ve shown three examples of these colors above, and all of the variations are listed below, beginning with the most common.

The TURQUOISE walled Cape Cod House has two color variations as is illustrated above. This most likely indicates that there were two different production runs of this color. The windows are also a brighter WHITE color on the LIGHT TURQUOISE walled variation. We believe that the darker color was manufactured first because of the excessive glue that was used to hold the windows and the doors in place. Bachmann improved with a more judicious use of this glue during the latter portion of production of the Cape Cod House.

Bachmann would glue the doors and windows in place at their factory, so about the only part that is prone to be found missing is the chimney. The chimney should always be the same color as the walls. We’ve illustrated the three different colors that have been used with this house to the above. The WHITE version of this chimney is the identical to what is used on the Suburban Station. We are always looking for original chimneys for this structure, especially the colored ones. All of the these chimneys have been reproduced.
