Lionel Trains Lubricating and Maintenance Kit No. 927Smoke Fluid No. 909 was a specially designed fluid that was to be used with locomotives No. 243, 746 and 1872. It would also work with the smoking caboose No. 6557. Available from 1957 until 1966, it was also available during the last two years of the Post War Period: 1968 and 1969.

Lionel cataloged each 2 ounce plastic squeeze bottle for separate sale. The bottles were 3-7/8 inches high and should not be confused with the 1/2 ounce bottle that is 2-1/16 inches high that was included with the smoking locomotives and cars. This smaller bottle was not available for separate sale.

These bottles were displayed in a dealer box that had separators for 12 bottles and the top of this box would fold back to display the contents. There is a variation of this box. Some of them have the "hat emblem" of the Toy Manufactures Association on one flap.

The bottles are often found with faded or missing writing on the side.

Liquid Smoke Fluid Capsules No. 909-20

Illustrated to the right is a picture of the original Lionel No. 909-20 Smoke Fluid Capsules in their original containing package. These unusual packets were included as a peripheral item in sets with a smoking locomotive that required liquid smoke rather than the earlier issued No. SP Smoke Pellets. Lionel started providing smoke fluid in this form around 1962. The packaging has a kraft paper backing with a clear cellophane that has been fused together around the edges. Most of these capsules were quickly used up by the owners who were encouraged by Lionel to replace them with the above described No. 909 Smoke Fluid Bottle. Many of the remaining packages were just discarded over the years, making these exceedingly difficult to find today.spacer
