Truck Trailers Car No. 6440 was produced from 1961 until 1963 on a DARK RED unpainted No. 6511-2 mold that came with early AAR trucks that are riveted directly to the chassis and have disc couplers. The number is heat-stamped to the left of the "LIONEL" inscription on the car sides.
This car was part of the cost reduction regimen instituted in 1961 by Lionel, and as such, it is a reduced quality version of the No. 6430 Cooper–Jarrett Truck Trailers Car. There is not a metal rack to hold the vans in place. Nor does the Lionel Service Manual mention any type of retaining part to accomplish this purpose. Came with two Type 7 GRAY trailers. Slots on the trailers are there for name plates, but no name plates were included. Original trailers are embossed "MADE IN U.S. OF AMERICA / THE LIONEL CORPORATION / NEW YORK, N.Y." in three lines on the bottom. There are two variations:
Variation A: Has two operating disc couplers.
Variation B: Has one operating disc coupler and one solid non-operating coupler.
