The Watchman's Shanty

Initially released in 1958, this structure came with either LIGHT BROWN or DARK BROWN walls, with DARK GRAY or LIGHT GRAY roofs, or DARK GRAY or LIGHT GRAY walls, with LIGHT BROWN or DARK BROWN roofs. It was also manufactured with "MARBLED" colors of BROWN/BLACK walls and GRAY/BLACK roofs or GRAY/BLACK walls and BROWN/BLACK roofs. These were the "bagged" versions, No. 5407, which were issued by Bachmann in 1963. Unless the parts are in the original bag with the header card, many collectors are choosing to store them in a box that originally held the solid colored versions.

The parts that are shown here are the ones that are most often missing or broken from this structure. The pictures show these parts in solid colors. I need all colors of these parts, especially the "MARBLED" colored parts. On the smaller parts you have to look carefully to even notice the blending of these colors on the piece. The most commonly missing parts are shown below.

Watchman's Shanty ChimneyChimney
This chimney fits on the rear wall of the shanty, and it came in both LIGHT GRAY, DARK GRAY, LIGHT BROWN & DARK BROWN and should be the same color as the roof. All of these colors are available as reproduction parts. I also need the "MARBLED" type.

This piece is the smallest of the wall sections and is often missing. The "Tool Box End Piece" came in LIGHT GRAY, DARK GRAY, LIGHT BROWN & DARK BROWN and should be the same color as the other walls. None of these colors are available as a reproduced part. I also need the "MARBLED" type.

No. 5407 Bagged Variation

The No. 5407 MARBLED Variation

The No. 5407 was issued in 1963 in bags that were suitable for hanging from a retailer’s rack. A picture of this packaging is shown above right.

Like the other bagged structures, what made these versions unique was the MARBLED plastic. The walls were GRAY/BLACK and the platform, roof & trim were BROWN/BLACK or these colors were reversed.

This is the most difficult version of the Watchman’s Shanty to find, especially with the small light over the door, and the chimney that were also MARBLED. A picture of this assembled shanty is shown to the right.

Current Issue with Loading Platform
This Watchman’s Shanty comes with BROWN walls and a GRAY platform and roof. These colors have been used before on this piece! To tell the difference examine the amount of flash and look at the thickness of the walls. Today’s issues are made in China and are not as thick as the previously issued Plasticville.
