The Lionel UTC Lockon was designed to connect the transformer to the track in all instances save on a permanent layout. The UTC Lockon would work with O27, O, and Standard Gauge track.
Attaching this lockon on to the side of the track would provide connection to the center rail and one of the outside rails. Power to the other outside rail was provided through the ties on the track.
Produced during the Pre-War Period from 1936 until 1942, this Lockon usually is found included with the CO-1 Track Clips and was always a component of the train sets of the period. It was available during the Post War Period during 1945 and 1946. This lockon was replaced by the CTC Lockon in 1947 since Standard Gauge track was not produced after the end of World War II.
