The Smoking Caboose No. 6557 was available only in 1958 and 1959 and was produced on a painted Die 3C body that is mounted on a blackened sheet metal chassis that typically is found with one brake wheel and bar-end trucks with one tabbed magnetic coupler.
Lionel put a smoke unit in this caboose and it came with a half ounce bottle of No. 909 smoke fluid. The No. 55-300 lamp for this car was specially produced to handle the increased current caused by the addition of the smoke unit.
Included was instruction sheet No. 6557-18 dated 8-58 that used DARK BLUE ink on YELLOW paper. We’ve pictured both the front and back pages of this instruction sheet below. There are three variations:
Variation A: Has a painted TUSCAN body that has the number to the left side.
Variation B: Has a painted DARK TUSCAN body that has the number to the left side.
Variation C: Has a painted BROWN body with the number to the right side. A scarce variation.
