The Turbo Missile Launching Depressed Center Car No. 3309 was frequently found in uncataloged sets in 1963 and 1964.
The "Turbo Missile" is a wheel shaped circular molded WHITE plastic piece with a RED center and tip. This was launched by spring device located in the depressed portion of the flat car. This depressed center flat car was molded in several colors and only rarely is found with an extra BLUE molded rack that held a spare missile as was issued for the No. 3349. The other distinguishing difference between these two flat cars is that fact that this car came with either AAR or Arch Bar trucks that would have either one, or both fixed couplers.
There are three different instruction sheets for this car. All are dated 7-62. We’ve shown the No. 3309-5 below.
There are four variations:
Variation A: Has a LIGHT RED molded flat car.
Variation B: Has a darker CHERRY RED flat car.
Variation C: Indentical to Variation A but has a TEAL colored Turbo Missile Launcher spring device. Believed to have originated with Madison Hardware.
Variation D: Has an OLIVE DRAB colored flat car that was made for set No. 19334 and was sold by J.C. Penny during 1963-64 among other uncataloged sets. This is the hardest variation of this car to find.
