The Lionel New York Central F-3 No. 2344 replaced the No. 2333 in 1950. Available until 1952, it was replaced by the No. 2354 in 1953. This version was equipped with Magnetraction. Lionel had a problem with the lettering wearing off on the previous issue, so this version uses a heat-stamp for the lettering instead of the previously used rubber-stamp. The stripes still use a rubber-stamped on the sides. These characteristics disdinguish original shells from reproductions which have used a silk-screen process.
This version has the screens on the roof vents, portholes with lenses, front grab rails, side ladders, electronic couplers on the front ends, and solid rear couplers. This diesel came with a horn that was operated by a D Cell battery, and a three position directional unit whose control lever was adjustable from underneath the chassis. The dual horizontal worm drive motors powered each axle...and they make a neat "growling" sound when operating! There are three variations:
Variation A: Convex celluloid porthole covers that are often missing and a large GM decal (1950).
Variation B: Porthole covers are the snap-in clear plastic type, and a small BLACK/WHITE GM decal (1951-52). |
