Floodlight Tower No. 195 A Variation

Floodlight Tower No. 195The Floodlight Tower No. 195 was available from 1957 until the end of the Post War period in 1969 with the exception of the year 1967. Because of the length of production there were quite a few variations caused by the fact that the tower was used by two different accessories that were introduced after the No. 195:

No. 199 Microwave Relay Tower
spacer
No. 299 Code Transmitting Beacon.

Both of these accessories required changes to the mold of the top piece on the tower to accommodate the different functions of these accessories.

No. 195-75 Box End

Between 1957 and 1960 Lionel would offer for separate sale additional floodlight heads and posts to extend the electrical contacts under the No. 195-75. What is most collectable is the box and the floodlight head extension posts. These are required to achieve a Like New grading standard. Three additional floodlight heads could be mounted on this tower giving an impressive 16 light illumination in both directions.

No. 195-75 Flood Light Head and Extension Posts

There are three variations:

Variation A: Has a LIGHT TAN plastic base with a SILVER colored plastic tower that was heat-stamped "LIONEL" in RED letters on two sides of the SILVER painted tower. It had two wire clips on the bottom as is illustrated below and was inscribed, "PT. NO. 195-15 / MADE IN U.S. OF AMERICA" and "195 RAILROAD YARD FLOODLIGHT / THE LIONEL CORPORATION / NEW YORK, N.Y."

Variation B: Has a DARK TAN plastic base with raised letters inscription "NO. 199 MICROWAVE TOWER" on the bottom, has a SILVER painted tower that also has a RED rubber stamp "195 FLOOD LIGHT" on the bottom.
spacer
Variation C: Has an unpainted LIGHT TAN plastic base with the raised "LIONEL" letters on the tower that are not painted. This was an obvious move to save production costs.

Since the No. 195 was produced at the same time as the other towers noted above it is found with both shades of TAN base and different tower tops. Only Variation B is more difficult to find.

The best way to wire this floodlight tower is to an accessory circuit with variable voltage so that the intensity of the light can be adjusted.
