The Lionel Artificial Grass No. 919 was a common scenic accessory that was available throughout almost the entire Post War Period: 1946 until 1964.
These eight ounce bags contain GREEN dyed saw dust, but it is the bag that has some interesting variations. During the Prewar years these bags were predominantly printed with BLACK serif lettering and this type of printing may have been carried over into the first year of Postwar production.
As the Postwar era began in ernest in 1946, the lettering on these bags became RED in color, but the first issues retained the serif lettering. Later the lettering was changed to the more common sans-serif type that continued being printed in the RED color.
Not many collectors know of these variations and they do not generate a tremendous amount of interest. However, the early postwar variations are rare, and because anyone can make GREEN saw dust, it is only the bag that is collectable. |
