The body was painted OLIVE and ORANGE with YELLOW heat-stamped stripes separating these colors. The lettering is by heat-stamp; OLIVE on the ORANGE stripe, and YELLOW on the OLIVE stripes with a Great Norther decal to the right. The Multi-block door has been painted to match the colors of the car body. This box car has occasionally been found without the YELLOW stripes. This is a factory error.
Early production (1956-57) came with bar-end trucks equipped with tabbed couplers, while the 1966 production came with AAR trucks that have disc couplers.
Three different boxes have been found for the 1966 production. The above picture box has a pasted number "450" tag, while the display box to the right has been rubber-stamped on the end "6464-450," and the late classic box illustrated below that was first issued in 1956. Note that the number that is stamped on the car is "6464450" without the dash. |
