Lionel Trains Water Tank No. 138The Water Tank No. 138 was available from 1953 until 1957 and would be the last of the water tanks produced during the Post War Period. Like the No. 30 and No. 38 before it, this tank would lower the water spout remotely, but unlike the No. 30 and No. 38, there are no screw holes for the screws that hold the roof down, and the tank is single walled and was not designed to hold water.

Because this tank’s base and supports are made out of plastic, the current to operate the spout had to transmitted by metal rods leading from the connecting clips on the bottom of the base to the electrical coil inside the tank. The base was renumbered for this issue to No. 138-4 and "NO. 138 WATER TANK" is inscribed on the top of the base.

The early editions came with a No. 96C Controller, while those issued after 1954 have a No. 90 Controller.

This controller, along with the required wiring and an instruction sheet were contained in a parts envelope numbered 138-30 that is illustrated to the right.
