Lionel Trains Newsstand with Horn No. 114The Newsstand with Horn No. 114 was available for sale beginning in 1957 and would be offered until 1959. Like many other items during the Post War Period, Lionel would use the same basic configuration on the Newsstand with Horn that was used for the No. 118 Newsstand with Whistle that was only available in 1957 and 1958. Most of the parts are common to both of these accessories, but Lionel made the necessary changes to accommodate the horn and the battery that was needed to power this horn.

While using the same bicycle 1-1/2 volt horn as the diesel engines, this horn was given its own number (No. 114-55) because of the unique mounting bracket required to accommodate the space that was available inside the newsstand. To operate this horn a size D battery was required. The interior of this unit is shown above where the battery holder is clearly visible. The battery, in addition to the No. 90 Controller and wires were included in the Parts Envelope No. 144-33 that came packaged with this accessory.

As with all of the Lionel items that used a battery, collectors should examine the interior of this newsstand for any damage resulting from battery leakage, and note the inscription on the bottom as is pictured to the right.

This battery circuit was triggered by the No. 90 controller. There are four wiring connections on the bottom. The instructions also indicate how to use the No. 145C Track Contactor to activate the horn. A No. 153C Track Contactor could also be used for this purpose.

The interior of the newsstand is lighted by an No. L53 bulb which is the only reason for a direct connection to the transformer.

This accessory has a BROWN plastic base with a bench on one side of a YELLOW plastic structure with a SILVER roof. Commonly missing items include the posters, replicated foliage, opaque window glass, and the roof. Most of these parts are available as reproductions. Note: These parts are not labeled as reproductions. It is difficult today to find the Newsstand With Horn complete with all of the original parts in the original box as it was offered for sale during the years of production.

Only one instructions sheet was issued for this newsstand with horn. Printed with BROWN ink on YELLOW paper, No. 114-32 is dated 8-57. The front page is pictured below.

There are no variations.
